Major Road Upgrade Improving Safety In Coburg North

12 May 2022

The Andrews Labor Government has completed the final stage of works to upgrade a busy intersection in Coburg North ahead of schedule, making it safer for locals to access shops and services.

New traffic lights have been switched on at the intersection of Gaffney Street and Sussex Street, with dedicated turning lanes improving traffic flow and safety for motorists.

Pedestrians now have a safer way to cross the intersection, with new pedestrian crossings making it easier to access the popular Coburg North Village shopping centre and bus stops.

New bike lanes are also encouraging active transport and ensuring all road users can pass through the intersection safely.

Other safety upgrades include improvements to street lighting, resurfacing and the relocation of two bus stops, making them more accessible for passengers.

It follows the completion of stage one delivered late last year, which saw the removal of the old roundabout and installation of new pavement, footpaths and improved drainage.

Servicing the local Coburg North community as well as the wider Pascoe Vale area, the streamlining of the intersection has created a smoother journey for the 33,000 motorists who use it each day.

Delivered in response to community feedback, the $11.9 million upgrade is ensuring the new and improved intersection can continue to cater to the growing community for years to come.

The Labor Government is delivering road upgrades across the state to improve transport efficiency on the network, access to key locations and activity centres, and safety for all road users.
