The state’s most talented lifesavers have put club bragging rights on the line at the Victorian Lifesaving Championships at Ocean Grove.
More than 1000 competitors from nearly 40 clubs across Victoria stretched their skills and fitness to the limit, over a two-day tourism boost for the Surf Coast.
The meeting showcases the rescue techniques, expertise, strength and stamina of lifesavers that all Victorian swimmers depend on.
The action-packed championships were possible thanks to a $5000 Andrews Labor Government grant from the Significant Sporting Events Programme.
More than 30,000 Victorians volunteer at 57 lifesaving clubs, patrolling the state’s many inland and coastal waterways and beaches.
It’s a wise investment – in the last year, volunteer lifesavers have performed 513 rescues and assisted with 1548 first aid cases, helping prevent serious injury or drowning.
Swimmers should always swim between the flags at a patrolled beach, swim with a friend or family member and never take their eyes off children in the water.
