Liberals And Greens Stonewall Markham Yet Again

28 March 2018

The Liberals and Greens have once again joined forces to overturn a planning decision that would deliver more public housing for Victorians who need it the most.

Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley today condemned the Liberals and Greens’ anti-housing Coalition for again voting to revoke the planning scheme amendment that would allow for the Markham Estate revitalisation project.

The Markham project would replace outdated public housing units with a range of public, affordable and social housing. The project would have delivered 62 additional public housing dwellings on the former Markham site.

The Andrews Labor Government’s plans for a reduction in height directly addressed community concerns, after the Liberals and Greens blocked the original Planning Scheme Amendment in November last year.

Six homes on the estate would be fully accessible and provide for people with a range of mobility needs and requirements, and all homes on the estate would meet the Better Apartments Design Standards.

The Liberals and Greens’ shameful opposition to the Markham redevelopment proves what we already know – they don’t support public housing renewal in Victoria.

This is a slap in the face for the more than 36,000 Victorians on the Victorian Housing Register.

The Labor Government is providing a record investment in housing and homelessness of more than $800 million, on top of our $1 billion social housing growth fund.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Housing Martin Foley

“The Liberals and Greens have again united to block public housing renewal, and snub the more than 36,000 people on the Victorian Housing Register who are waiting for a home.”

“This Coalition of puritans and opportunists should be ashamed. They are blocking a vital project that would deliver much-needed public, affordable and social housing.”
