Minister for Equality Martin Foley today launched a new children’s book designed to increase understanding of the lives of transgender children.
The Gender Fairy, which was presented for the first time today at St Kilda Primary School, was written by local author Jo Hirst, the parent of a transgender child at the school.
The book tells the story of two transgender children who are educated and comforted by a fairy who talks to them about the importance of being true to who you are. The story approaches the subject with insight and simplicity.
The Gender Fairy also highlights issues around gender identity, such as gender stereotyping, and how they can be overcome through the support of family, friends and the community.
Designed as an educational resource for both children and adults, the book has been endorsed by Dr Michelle Telfer MBBS, Paediatrician Director at The Royal Children’s Hospital Gender Service.
The number of transitioning gender-diverse children using the Royal Children’s Hospital gender service has increased dramatically in recent years.
The Andrews Labor Government is investing $6 million over four years to reduce waiting times at the hospital’s gender clinic.
