Labor Government Supports Gippsland Workers

20 March 2015

The Andrews Labor Government will work with the Gippsland community to address insecure work and exploitation in the labour hire industry.

Minister for Industrial Relations, Natalie Hutchins, will tonight reaffirm the Labor Government's commitment at the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council’s annual Labour Day Dinner with Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing.

As promised before the election, the Labor Government will conduct an inquiry into insecure work, including sham contracting and the labour hire industry.

So-called ‘phoenix activities’, where a company transfers assets from an indebted company to a new company to avoid paying debts including workers’ wages and entitlements, will also be examined.

The Labor Government is standing up for workers in Gippsland, ensuring they are paid appropriately and employed in safe workplaces.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Industrial Relations, Natalie Hutchins

“Low-paid workers in insecure employment are particularly vulnerable and are at risk of being exploited.”

"The Andrews Labor Government believes that every worker in Gippsland, and across the state, deserves to be safe and paid fairly.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing

"Short-term contracts, temporary and casual work can suit some local workers, but for others it can just mean disadvantage."
