Labor Government Nabs The Global Nephrology Congress

02 March 2016

More than 4,000 delegates will converge on Victoria when the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre hosts the 2019 World Congress of Nephrology.

Minister for Tourism and Major Events John Eren today announced the Andrews Labor Government had secured the international conference, to take place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Congress will put Melbourne on a global stage before the eyes of the medical world, and contribute $23 million to Victoria’s economy.

Nephrology is a branch of medical science that deals with the study of the kidneys – and the associated diseases. The world’s leading medical minds will be in Melbourne to share their research and evaluate emerging technologies across the globe.

The City of Melbourne and Kidney Health Australia will deliver an active kidney health public screening and awareness campaign during the congress, giving all Victorians a chance to achieve greater health outcomes.

Victoria has something for everyone, and the World Congress of Nephrology is an opportunity for delegates to experience for themselves the best of everything we offer.

Business events boast the greatest yield of all tourism sectors, as delegates routinely spend up to six times as much as holiday makers, so we know events like these are important.

Business events contribute nearly $10 billion to the Victorian economy each year. That’s why the Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering the Second Stage of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, ensuring even more high yielding business visitors can come to our state.

The project will add thousands of square metres of new exhibition space and attract an additional 74,000 international visitors annually. They’ll be here keeping our bars, restaurants and hotels full, and our economy strong.
