Koorie Education Celebrated At 2018 Wurreker Awards

13 September 2018

Training providers, teachers, employers and employees who have made a significant contribution to Koorie training and employment have been celebrated at the 2018 Wurreker Awards.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney last night congratulated nominees and winners at the annual awards, hosted by the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI), which recognise outstanding achievement in supporting Koorie learners in vocational education and training (VET) and Koorie employment.

Through the Marrung: Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026, the Andrews Labor Government is working in partnership with VAEAI to improve learning and development outcomes for Koorie learners.

Koorie learners participating in VET are also supported through the Wurreker strategy, which aims to improve education and training delivery in the VET sector to achieve quality education, training and employment outcomes for Koorie learners.

To make it easier to access training, the Government is investing $172 million to make 30 priority TAFE courses and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses that lead to jobs that are most in demand from Victorian employers tuition free.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 is investing an additional $644 million to strengthen TAFE, address skills shortages and ensure all Victorians can access the training they need to get a good job.
