Key Freight Highways Receive The New Year Touch

06 February 2023

Two key freight routes across the south west are set to undergo major road rebuilding works as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s summertime works blitz.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said crews will target a total of four sections across the Glenelg and Hamilton highways in the coming weeks, supporting the producers of millions of dollars of local goods being transported across the state.

With work already underway along the Glenelg Highway, crews will be delivering a 2.4 kilometre rehabilitation east of Hamilton and a 2.3 kilometre road rebuild between Casterton and Coleraine.

The Hamilton Highway will see one of the largest road rebuilding projects for the 2022/23 maintenance season which includes 3.5 kilometre between Mortlake and Darlington. A second section of the Hamilton Highway will also be rebuilt at Hexham.

Other works set to be delivered across the region between now and mid-2023 include major road maintenance projects on Henty Highway and Casterton-Penola Road.

More than 160 individual maintenance projects will be delivered across the state’s south-west as part of the Labor Government’s 2022/23 regional road maintenance blitz, with around $39 million invested in rebuilding, resurfacing and resealing more than 245 kilometres of roads.

In total, the Labor Government has invested $780 million to maintain the state’s road assets for 2022/23, with more than 1,300 road maintenance projects set to be completed across Victoria.

Everyone deserves to make it home safely to their family and roadside workers are too often at risk simply doing their job – driving to the conditions, ignoring distractions and following the reduced speed limit and safety signs.

“We’re strengthening roads right across Victoria, including in the state’s south west, to improve connections for local drivers, freight operators and visitors to the regions.”

Our regional road maintenance blitz will ensure smoother, more reliable journeys along these major highways which serve as prime freight routes for the local dairy and timber industries.”
