Keeping Our Promises – New School For Miners Rest Complete

03 November 2021

The Andrews Labor Government has delivered on its promise to rebuild Miners Rest Primary School and give local students and staff the world-class facilities they deserve.

In 2018, the Labor Government made an election commitment of $21.6 million to rebuild Miners Rest as the growing school on Ballarat’s outskirts faced increased enrolments – just three years later, the Government has delivered.

Premier Daniel Andrews today visited the school to officially open the redevelopment – with 10 new classrooms, new entry and administration areas, arts and music rooms, food tech facilities, a vegetable garden, and landscaped open play areas.

The school now also boasts a new competition-grade gymnasium and synthetic grass football oval, which is available for the wider Miners Rest community to enjoy after school hours.

Situated in a major growth corridor, the project required extra land to future-proof the school for growing enrolments in the coming years – with the site has been enlarged from 1.5 hectares to 5.2 hectares.

The local community was heavily involved in the design of the new school, with an extensive consultation process over the past three years to ensure the school delivers on the community’s needs.

The oldest part of the school is the original Miners Flat School which dates back to Ballarat’s Gold Rush, and is now available for use for community meetings.

In the past seven years, the Labor Government has invested more than $10.9 billion in building new schools across the state and more than 1,700 school upgrades, creating 13,500 jobs in construction and through the supply chain.

With 62 schools opening between 2019 and 2024, the Government is well ahead in its work to open 100 new schools by 2026, ensuring every Victorian child has access to a great local school.
