Infrastructure Boost For Aboriginal Organisations

21 December 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting self-determination by improving the community facilities of Aboriginal organisations across Victoria.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gavin Jennings today announced a series of grants for Aboriginal organisations across Victoria to improve their facilities.

The Labor Government will provide:

  • $149,889 to Wandoon Estate Aboriginal Corporation to refurbish an old dairy shed to accommodate staff amenities, and renovate existing cattle yards to improve safety and efficiency at Coranderrk in Healesville
  • $50,000 to Elizabeth Morgan House Aboriginal Women’s Service Inc to develop a feasibility study around securing a new office space to address organisational growth
  • $70,000 to the Aborigines Advancement League Inc to upgrade flooring in Thornbury to ensure the facilities can continue to be used for community functions, meetings and forums
  • $50,000 to Moogji Aboriginal Council East Gippsland Inc to determine the business and community viability of relocating as the organisation has outgrown its current site.
  • $50,000 to Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association Ltd to develop a feasibility study on expanding the Torquay Ocean Park.
  • $45,000 to Federation of Victorian Traditional Owners Corporations to develop a feasibility study on how to best meet the organisations growing office requirements.
  • $147,785 to Aboriginal Community Elders Services to upgrade the guttering and walkways for buildings in their Brunswick East facility.
  • $50,000 to Murray Valley Aboriginal Cooperative to develop a business case on redeveloping, refurbishing or expanding.

The grants are from the second round of the Labor Government’s Aboriginal Community Infrastructure Program, which has invested $14.9 million to build new community infrastructure or to repair, refurbish or expand existing facilities.

Improving Aboriginal community infrastructure is fundamental to the pursuit of self-determination and social and economic development for Aboriginal Victorians.

The Labor Government acknowledges the right to self-determination and recognises that only when Aboriginal people are central to the decision-making processes that affect their lives, will sustained and long-term changes in health and wellbeing be achieved.
