The Andrews Labor Government has appointed an independent environmental expert to review operations of the Stawell gold mine and consult with the community.
Dr Peter Beck’s appointment has been endorsed by both the Friends of Big Hill community group and the mine owner, Newmarket Gold.
Dr Beck has more than 27 years’ experience in environmental science and geotechnical engineering as a consultant and academic. Specialising in the groundwater field with a focus on impact assessment, contaminant transport and remediation, he has completed more than 200 site assessment and remediation projects including large mining and infrastructure projects, residential, commercial and industrial developments.
Dr Beck will carry out the review to ensure the mine complies with licencing requirements and regulatory standards.
The Labor Government will also convene an independently facilitated workshop on Tuesday 6 October, which will be advertised this week.
Dr Beck will provide his independent assessment of the mine’s monitoring data at the workshop and will determine if any further testing or improvements are required.
The workshop will also provide local residents with an opportunity to ask questions about the mine’s operations and learn more about the environmental expectations and regulation of the mine.
Dr Beck will prepare a report for the government to consider following his review.
