Up-and-coming cricketers in Melbourne’s west will be able train and play in any weather at a new Indoor Cricket and Community Centre thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.
Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence today joined Treasurer and Member for Werribee Tim Pallas and Wyndham City Council Mayor Peter Maynard at Alfred Road Recreation Reserve in Werribee to announce the Labor Government’s $1.5 million funding investment towards the new cricket hub from the Community Cricket Program.
The new Centre will deliver state-of-the-art indoor training with six synthetic cricket training wickets, female friendly change rooms, administration rooms, learning and training area, social space and accessible amenities.
It will complement a future cricket oval and multi-use sporting fields for cricket, Australian Rules football and soccer, cricket nets, netball courts and pavilion to be developed at the site.
With more than 260 cricket teams based in the Wyndham area, the new hub will help home-grown talents take their game to the next level. The project will strengthen local cricket in the area enabling a talent pathway and year-round competition.
The new cricket centre is expected to be complete in early 2024 and is the latest to be backed by the Labor Government’s investment in community cricket hub developments of more than $7.24 million.
New hubs are also on the way to Ringwood’s Jubilee Park, Casey Fields in Cranbourne East and the Hume Community Cricket Hub in Greenvale. Once complete each of these venues will be Metropolitan Cricket and Community Centres, capable of hosting Victorian Premier cricket competition and supporting the growth in cricket participation.
The Community Cricket Program has invested more than $12.8 million in 63 cricket infrastructure projects across Victoria since 2019. The Program is part of the Government’s investment of more than $1.6 billion in community sport and active recreation infrastructure since 2014.
