Housing Boost For Vulnerable Families In Mitchell Region

01 August 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is building five social housing developments for vulnerable families with young children in the Mitchell Shire.

Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz visited Broadford today to announce a $2 million Victorian Property Fund grant to build eight dwellings at five sites across the shire, creating 19 extra bedrooms.

Five two-bedroom townhouses and three three-bedroom family homes will be constructed in Broadford, Wallan and Seymour, with the developments to be completed over three stages in 2020.

The project will be delivered by community housing agency BeyondHousing, and will identify low income singles and couples with children in the region.

BeyondHousing reported a higher rate of homelessness, with a growing demand for two and three bedroom dwellings to accommodate vulnerable families.

The $3.12 million project will see dwellings built at various locations across the three communities.

Affordability for tenants will be a primary focus of the developments, with all dwellings to be built to a 6-star environmental standard to reduce energy and water bills. BeyondHousing will propose to charge tenants 25 per cent of their household income.

BeyondHousing currently owns and manages 250 properties, and manages a further 478, and has 20 years experience in helping vulnerable Victorians find accommodation.
