Horsham On Track For Racecourse Upgrade

11 January 2016

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula today kicked off a major track upgrade at the Horsham racing centre.

Mr Pakula said the $470,000 overhaul would bring Horsham’s harness racing track in line with other top quality tracks including Ballarat, Bendigo, and Melton’s Tabcorp park.

The upgrade will see an increase in the camber on the turns to help horses more easily round corners while also reducing the risk of leg injuries.

A new sprint lane will also be added and the entire track resurfaced with finer grade materials for improved cushioning underfoot for the horses.

The Andrews Labor Government is providing more than $235,000 towards the improvements courtesy of the Victorian Racing Industry Fund.

Harness Racing Victoria and the Horsham & District Harness Racing Club are each providing more than $118,000.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula

“Today represents the first step towards creating a cutting edge track for Horsham and helping secure the future of harness racing in the Wimmera for many years to come.”

“Not only will these upgrades bring the track in line with other top harness tracks in the state, it also reflects our commitment to animal welfare by improving the track to help reduce risks of leg injuries.”
