Helping To Celebrate Chinese New Year In Box Hill

01 October 2018

Chinese New Year celebrations in Melbourne’s east will be bigger and better in 2019, with a re-elected Andrews Labor Government to support our proud Chinese communities in bringing in the Year of the Pig.

Multicultural Affairs Minister Robin Scott today met with the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse to announce Labor will provide $50,000 to support their Chinese New Year Festival in 2019.

More than 370,000 Chinese-Australians call Victoria home, making it one of the largest Chinese communities in Australia.

Cultural events like the Chinese New Year Festival are important for bringing the community together.

As part of its Victorian Budget 2018/19, the Andrews Labor Government provided an additional $1.4 million towards the Multicultural Festivals and Events program.

Only Labor will stand with our state’s proud multicultural communities, and only Labor is willing to make the investments that really matter.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott

“We’re home to one of Australia’s biggest Chinese populations, so it’s only fitting that we’re also home to more Chinese New Year celebrations for the whole community to enjoy.”

“With this investment, we’ll celebrate the important contribution of our Chinese community in Victoria and mark one of the most important days in the Lunar Calendar.”
