Heinz Street Crossing Upgrade Fast-Tracked

15 March 2017

The upgrade of the Heinz Street level crossing in Bendigo will be fast-tracked to boost safety and save lives.

Minister for Public Transport and local Member Jacinta Allan has announced that the Heinz Street crossing will now be upgraded by the end of this year, six months sooner than originally planned.

The Andrews Labor Government is accelerating its $50 million Safer Country Crossings Program (SCCP) so all upgrades are finished by the end of next year. The program was due to be complete by mid-2019.

The crossing will be upgraded with bells and boom gates to make this section of the Bendigo line safer for passengers and significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

The Safer Country Crossings Program has already upgraded road crossings in Sandys Lane in Gnotuk, Phalps Road in Pirron Yallock, and Back Larpent Road in Larpent, Racecourse Road in Chiltern, Rutherglen-Springhurst Road in Springhurst, Palmerston Street in Baddaginnie, Caroll Road in Benalla, Mahers Road in Violet Town and Nagambie-Locksley Road in Locksley, and Tragowel Road in Tragowel.

It’s part of the Labor Government’s unprecedented level crossing safety campaign, which includes crossing removals and upgrades, and increased fines for illegally crossing the tracks.
