Giving Young People A Voice In Melbourne’s North

10 October 2019

A weekend forum in Northcote will provide a platform for young people in Melbourne’s north to have their say on matters that are important to them.

Improving transport links, finding work and staying healthy will be on the agenda when the Northern Metropolitan Partnership’s youth forum kicks off at 9.30am on Saturday.

Minister for Suburban Development Marlene Kairouz said social connection, education and mental health were other key issues that had been raised at events in the past.

The Andrews Labor Government’s Metropolitan Partnerships program provides the community with a path to decision-makers at state and local level, to inform priorities on jobs, services and infrastructure in their region.

The Northern Metropolitan Partnership is focusing on youth in 2019 and is calling on people aged 16 to 25 to help find solutions to local issues and better connect young people to services and each other.

The Labor Government is acting on priorities raised in the last youth forum held in the region, including creating new bike and walking trails, boosting support for mental health initiatives and backing local councils to better plan and build key services, infrastructure and services in growth areas.

The Northern region is one of Melbourne’s most multiculturally diverse and fastest growing areas and also takes in environmentally-significant green corridors.

The Northern Metropolitan Partnership will use insights gained at the Northern Youth Forum to make recommendations in its annual independent report to the Government.

The forum will run at the Northcote Town Hall from 9.30am-3pm on Saturday, 12 October – register at Link .

Young people who are unable to attend can still get involved by sharing their story at Link .
