Giving Veterans The Job Support They Need

10 February 2017

The Andrews Labor Government will embark on a strategy to help up to 250 young veterans transitioning back to civilian life find jobs in the public sector.

The strategy is a key component of the Labor Government’s response to the Victorian Veterans Sector Study Report, which aims to help us better understand the needs of our ex-servicemen and women.

The report makes 14 recommendations to safeguard the welfare of Victoria’s veterans, and we have accepted every one.

Our response to the Victorian Veterans Sector Study Report will ensure:

  • Current legislation is reviewed and upgraded so it continues to meet the needs of the veteran sector
  • Ex-Service Organisations are better equipped to support veterans
  • Veterans receive better support as they transition to civilian life
  • Comprehensive data collection to better understand the needs and numbers of veterans in Victoria

The employment strategy will be developed over the next 12 months and will be promoted to veteran networks and people exiting the Australian Defence Force who move to Victoria.

It will help veterans apply for public sector jobs with advice and interview tips, and track the number of veterans applying for positions.

The Labor Government already supports the RSL to deliver a program to help address social isolation among young veterans.

We also funded the Richmond Veterans Housing Project, where young veterans facing crisis can find their feet again with short-term accommodation.
