Giving Indigenous Business The Support It Deserves

28 June 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is helping grow Aboriginal businesses and employment across the Goulburn Valley.

Minister for Industry and Employment Ben Carroll today visited the Rumbalara Football and Netball club in Shepparton to announce $630,000 for the Kaiela Institute to set up the Algabonyah Business Development Unit.

The program, an initiative of the Algabonyah Community Revitalisation Project, has been designed to generate stronger Aboriginal business development and growth across the region.

It will also support industry-led training and businesses to help deliver the Aboriginal jobs targets on major infrastructure projects in the region.

A Memorandum of Understanding has also been signed between the Kaiela Institute and Lendlease, which is building the $168.5 million Goulburn Valley Health Redevelopment.

The partnership will assist Lendlease in recruiting and retaining local Aboriginal workers and provide participants with the opportunity to develop a career in the infrastructure construction industry.

Today’s announcement builds on the Labor Government $1.4 million for the Algabonyah Employment Partnership – part of the highly successful Jobs Victoria employment initiative.

The partnership has so far delivered 50 of the targeted 75 job placements for people who struggle with a lack of housing, drug and alcohol problems, Centrelink issues or commitments to community based orders.

Since its inception two years ago, Jobs Victoria has helped to place more than 6100 people facing barriers to employment, in work.
