Giving Ballarat Patients The Healthcare They Deserve

16 February 2018

More people living in Western Victoria are now receiving urgent heart assessment, treatment and care thanks to a new cardiac catheterisation laboratory funded by the Andrews Labor Government.

Premier Daniel Andrews today visited hard-working doctors and nurses at Ballarat Hospital’s new state-of-the-art facility – a key election commitment.

Cardiac catheterisation laboratories – known as ‘cath labs’ – are used for lifesaving heart procedures such as stenting, angiography, inserting pacemakers and implantable defibrillators.

The $10 million facility is just one of the ways we’re giving patients and healthcare professionals at Ballarat Health Services access to the cardiac care and equipment that they deserve.

But if Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals get their way and slash health funding, Ballarat will be millions of dollars worse off thanks to new plans to cut health funding.

Once again, Ballarat locals are being dudded by Malcolm Turnbull, with new analysis confirming his plans to short-change Ballarat Health Services by $53.5 million over five years.

Under Malcolm Turnbull’s National Health Reform Agreement 2020/21 to 2024/25, the Liberals are refusing to pay their share, capping their contribution at 6.5 per cent growth. It won’t meet demand in our hospitals.

The Federal Liberals are also refusing to increase the Commonwealth contribution rate to 50 per cent.

Malcolm Turnbull’s unfair plan is the equivalent of 8,613 fewer surgeries, 428 fewer nurses or 179 fewer doctors at Ballarat Health Services – and that will leave Western Victorians waiting longer for vital healthcare.

And to make matters worse, Matthew Guy refuses to stand up to his mate Malcolm Turnbull when he cuts Victorian hospitals. You can’t trust the Liberals when it comes to healthcare – all they do is cut.

Quote attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“The doctors and nurses at the new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory do a tremendous job saving lives, but each and every one will be dudded by Malcolm Turnbull’s health cuts – and so will Ballarat patients.”

Quote attributable to Member for Wendouree Sharon Knight

“We will not stand by while vital funds are cut from our hospitals – they will impact on doctors, nurses and crucial care that locals need.”
