A recruitment drive is about to start in the Latrobe Valley as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s $2.3 billion High Capacity Metro Trains Project.
Times Electric Australia, a subsidiary of the world’s largest rolling stock manufacturer, is looking to fill the roles with skilled people from the Morwell area.
The contract will create around 30 new jobs, with 25 based in Morwell. Jobs that need to be filled range from manufacturing workers and electrical technicians to project managers, quality controllers and administrative support positions.
The electrical trades skills of the Latrobe Valley’s power industry workforce made Morwell the ideal location for Times Electric Australia to establish its manufacturing facility for Victoria’s largest train manufacturing project.
The Morwell facility will manufacture the traction system for the trains, which make the trains move. Completed parts will then be sent to Newport in Melbourne, where the trains will be assembled and fitted out.
The High Capacity Metro Trains Project will create 1,100 jobs across metropolitan and regional Victoria, with 15 per cent of jobs set aside for apprentices, trainees or cadets, and seven per cent for disadvantaged workers.
The first High Capacity Metro Trains will begin taking passengers on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines in 2019, and will run to Sunbury through the new Metro Tunnel when the project is complete in 2025.
