Get A Glimpse Of Racing’s Greatest Prize

16 June 2015

Minister for Racing, Martin Pakula, is calling on Victorians to come get a glimpse of the Melbourne Cup as it begins its tour around the country ahead of Australia’s greatest horse race in November.

Launching the tour today, Mr Pakula was helped by enthusiastic youngsters from Kensington Primary School.

Since it began in 2003, the Melbourne Cup Tour has become a highlight of the carnival, providing communities from across Australia and New Zealand a chance to share in the excitement of Australia’s premier racing event.

The tour unites communities bringing joy through its visits to schools, hospitals, aged care facilities and racing events that raise funds to support local organisations and special causes.

More than 325,000 people came for the racing, fashion and entertainment at last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival, generating a record economic benefit of $374 million for Victoria.

More than $112 million of that came from international and interstate attendees.

Victoria is the proud home of Australian racing, generating more than $2.8 billion in economic activity and supporting more than 26,500 full time jobs.

This year’s Melbourne CupExternal Link – the 155th running of the race – will take place on Tuesday 3rd November at Flemington Racecourse.
