Geotech Works Kick Off At Bendigo Games Village

28 February 2023

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with delivering the Commonwealth Games village in Bendigo by starting vital geotechnical works at the Flora Hill site today.

The village will be home to around 1,600 athletes and officials when the Games get underway in March 2026.

The geotechnical investigations will take place over two weeks starting from 27 February and the local community can expect to see workers conducting investigations both within the site area, and along the adjacent roadways of Osborne Street, Cook Street, and Retreat Road.

These investigations are an important first step before works commence on site, and will inform the planning, engineering and construction works on the village.

Boreholes will allow engineers to collect physical samples of soil and rock beneath the surface to verify ground conditions, including groundwater, that will help inform the detailed design of the village.

Traffic management measures will be in place during the investigations, with minor diversions necessary for short periods of time to safely facilitate digging within the roadways.

It is estimated the Games will contribute more than $3 billion to Victoria’s economy, creating more than 7500 jobs before, during and after the Games.

Development Victoria is the Government’s delivery partner for the Games villages and will oversee the contractors undertaking the geotechnical investigations at Flora Hill.
