Geelong Hosts Community Violence Forum

01 December 2015

Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence Fiona Richardson has today met with local leaders and Geelong residents to reaffirm the importance of addressing family violence.

Visiting as part of the state-wide Victoria Against Violence campaign, Ms Richardson joined with local Members of Parliament, John Eren, Christine Couzens and Gayle Tierney, in hosting a forum with members of the local community, as well as a dedicated roundtable with councils from across the region.

The meetings come as the latest Crime Statistics Agency data shows the family incident rate for the Greater Geelong local government area and police region was 3,085, between July 2014 to June 2015. This is an increase on the previous period of July 2013 to June 2014, when 2,769 incidents occurred.

Speaking at the community forum, Ms Richardson said that no postcode or community was immune to family violence, and that every resident in Geelong and surrounds had a role to play in ending violence towards women and girls.

The visit forms part of the 16-day Victoria Against Violence campaign, which aims to promote education and awareness of family violence.
