A new three-stage project to enhance Konongwootong Reservoir’s fishing facilities has started thanks to funding from the Victorian Government’s Recreational Fishing Grants Program.
Every year the Victorian Government, through revenue derived from the sale of recreational fishing licences, funds projects that improve fishing opportunities.
This week, Wannon Water began the first stage of the project which will improve access to the non-powered boat ramp and upgrade the parking area off Reservoir Rd.
The next stage will see an all-abilities terraced fishing platform installed along with a walking path and picnic shelter, before the third and final stage of works that will improve access from Nareen Rd, develop new walking trails and install interpretive signage.
The new car parking facilities and access points will make the reservoir safer, while the new fishing platform and walking path will assist all anglers, including those with limited mobility.
The 2015-16 Victorian Budget provided $20 million to implement the Andrews Labor Government’s Target One Million plan to grow recreational fishing in Victoria by encouraging families to get outdoors and enjoy fishing.
Improving fishing opportunities and facilities is a key component of the plan, which will grow participation to one million anglers by 2020, boost fish stocking from three to five million per annum and strengthen angling club membership.
Stage one and two of the enhancement works at Konongwootong Reservoir are scheduled for completion in July 2015. The third and final stage is scheduled to commence in 2016.
Access to the boat ramp temporarily closed from 25 May, 2015 to protect public safety while works are underway. Anglers can still access the reservoir via the eastern access point or from Nareen Rd.
