Federal Government Must Back Local Steel And Local Jobs

07 April 2016

The Andrews Labor Government is working hard to support local jobs at steelmaker Arrium, following today's announcement that the company has gone into voluntary administration.

The Labor Government has been in contact with the company, the administrator, union and the Australian Steel Institute to offer its support and will continue working with them through this process.

Around 900 Victorians are employed at Arrium’s operations in Laverton North, Scoresby, Lyndhurst, Port Melbourne and Geelong.

The Government has been advised that Arrium will continue operating and there is unlikely to be any imminent job losses.

Treasurer Tim Pallas and Minister for Industry Lily D’Ambrosio have called on the Turnbull Government to take immediate action to support the company and thousands of Australians it employs.

Victoria has taken the lead in supporting the steel industry with our policy to use 100 per cent local steel in the removal of the state's 50 most dangerous and congested level crossings.

Victoria also has the strongest industry participation policy in Australia with set targets for local content on major government projects such as new hospitals and schools.

These policies support our local industries and local jobs.

The Turnbull Government needs to follow Victoria's lead and take immediate action with strong industry policies to get behind our local steel industry and jobs.
