Extension Granted To Walshe Review Into Prison Riot

03 September 2015

The Victorian Government has granted an extension to the finishing date for the independent investigation into the riot at the Metropolitan Remand Centre.

Inquiry head Kieran Walshe requested an extension until 4 December to provide his report.

Mr Walshe advised the Government that due to the volume of information, and other documentation being sought, an additional three weeks was needed to complete his investigation.

Mr Walshe was asked to:

  • consider the events of 30 June and 1 July
  • review the State’s response to and preparedness for the incident and the management of the emergency, giving specific consideration to joint agency operations
  • identify any lessons from the incident and make recommendations for future improvements

The investigation has been consulting relevant parties as required, including Corrections Victoria, Victoria Police, the Metropolitan Fire Brigade, the Country Fire Authority and Ambulance Victoria.

Its findings will be made public except for any matters that might compromise safety and security.
