An expert team will be assembled to advise the Andrews Labor Government on how best to grow Victoria’s wine industry and boost profitability into the future.
Minister for Agriculture Jaala Pulford today announced expressions of interest for the Labor Government’s Wine Industry Ministerial Advisory Committee are now open.
Victoria’s $1.5 billion wine industry has 21 wine regions with more than 800 wineries and employs more than 11,500 people, including 2,600 people directly employed in grape growing and winemaking.
The Ministerial Advisory Council will bring together industry knowledge and advise the Government on research, development and extension, biosecurity, regional investment, skills and workforce, infrastructure, regulation and trade matters.
In line with the Labor Government’s commitment at least 50 per cent of members of the Ministerial Advisory Council will be women, and the Government is seeking applications from individuals with expertise in relevant areas such as wine making, grape growing, wine trading, research science, extension, local government, marketing, packaging, logistics and tourism.
The Ministerial Advisory Council will be complemented by the investment of $1 million in the 2015-16 Victorian Budget to fund the development of a Victorian Wine Strategy to support the wine industry through initiatives that boost cellar door visits, grow exports, create jobs and promote regional tourism.
