Minister for Education James Merlino today joined hundreds of students to celebrate science achievement on the Mornington Peninsula.

The Southern Peninsula Principals’ Network 2015 Annual Science Fair was attended by more than 500 Years 5 to 7 students.

The Fair, now in its second year, aims to support science teaching among government schools through the sharing of science experiments and ideas.

Schools taking part include Boneo Primary School, Balnarring Primary School, Dromana Primary School, Dromana Secondary College, Peninsula Special School, Red Hill Consolidated School, Somers Primary School, Somerville Secondary College, Tyabb Railway Station Primary School and Western Port Secondary College.

The Andrews Labor Government recently announced several Education State initiatives to encourage excellence in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths - across the school system.

The Secondary STEM Catalysts program will build on Victoria’s existing strengths and train 60 teachers across 30 schools to become experts who can inspire fellow teachers to bring STEM alive for students in Years 7 and 8.

The $27 million Primary Mathematics and Science Specialists initiative will train 200 primary school teachers to work alongside other teachers in over 100 of the state’s most disadvantaged primary schools.

In addition, 10 new Tech Schools will be high-tech centres of learning excellence right across Victoria.
