Done Deal: Casey Hospital Expansion Set To Begin

08 September 2017

The final contracts have been signed and a builder appointed to start work on the Andrews Labor Government's world-class $135 million expansion of Casey Hospital.

Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today announced the Plenary Health consortium, including Plenary Group, Watpac Limited and Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions (BGIS), would be responsible for work on the project that will meet soaring growth in demand for acute healthcare in Melbourne’s booming south east.

The Casey expansion will deliver 160 new beds, the hospital’s first intensive care unit, six new operating theatres, a new day surgery unit, and will include an upgraded pharmacy, pathology, back-of-house areas and expanded parking facilities.

The 13,000 square-metre project will enable Monash Health to treat more than 25,000 more patients at Casey Hospital, perform an extra 8,000 procedures and support an extra 1,300 births annually.

The Labor Government is also partnering with Monash Health and Monash University on the project to provide education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students.

Casey Hospital is located in the third fastest growing municipality in Victoria. The municipality’s population increases by an average 7,300 people a year with more than a dozen babies born daily in the City of Casey.

Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley led a Community Advisory Group to conduct consultations and help shape the project.

The Casey Hospital redevelopment is expected to be open to patients by late 2019.

The Labor Government’s Victorian Budget 2017/18 includes $428.5 million for new hospital upgrades and equipment. This also includes $63.2 million to expand the Monash Medical Centre emergency department.

Monash Health will receive $1.32 billion in Labor Government funding in 2017/18, which is nearly $80 million, or 6.4 per cent more, than the previous year.
