Delivering A Stronger North Richmond

19 April 2021

The Andrews Labor Government is investing in projects by and for the North Richmond community and more affordable housing to ensure a bright and safe future for the area.

Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today announced the recipients of the North Richmond Precinct Community Projects, delivering for the local community and making the area a thriving place to live, work and visit.

Almost $1.5 million is being shared between 12 community led projects including Lennox St market, a youth homework club, an outdoor gym, a festival of women, and African drum, dance and song workshops.

The successful projects were decided by a public vote ensuring the people who live and work in North Richmond are directly involved in what goes ahead in their neighbourhood.

The project with the most community votes was the Women’s Health Economic and Inclusion Project put forward by Belgium Avenue Neighbourhood House.

The project, which will be led by females with migrant and public housing backgrounds, has been awarded over $134,000 to promote wellness, build resilience and empower local women.

Almost $400,000 has also been invested to deliver the new Richmond Youth Hub in partnership with the local community and the City of Yarra, providing a safe space for youth aged 8-21 to connect and engage in activities, including holiday programs and events.

The hub also provides access to valuable health and wellbeing information and support – including mental health, employment and referral services – with programs and services overseen by a dedicated youth co-ordinator.

The Labor Government is getting on with delivering much needed social and affordable housing for the North Richmond community thanks to the landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build program – delivering more than 12,000 new homes across Victoria and creating 10,000 jobs each year over the next four years.

Kerstin Thompson Architects have been appointed as architects for the Elizabeth Street fast-start site in North Richmond. Construction is expected to start later this year and be finished in 2024.

A masterplan is also being prepared to guide the build and future investment in the North Richmond precinct, with opportunities for community input into the future.
