Delivering For Melbourne’s Suburbs

18 May 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring sustainable growth in Melbourne’s suburbs with the creation of the Suburban Development portfolio - marking a significant change in the way government delivers services and infrastructure.

The portfolio will oversee the establishment of the Metropolitan Partnerships – one for each of the 6 metro regions of Melbourne – that bring together local government, industry and the community sector to advise on initiatives that will attract investment, create jobs and improve liveability.

The Suburban Development portfolio will establish Five Year Plans for each Region that will outline the Labor Government's approach to addressing its specific needs and facilitate cross-portfolio delivery of investments and service delivery in Melbourne’s suburbs.

The Labor Government has also established the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Board, to be chaired by Member for Broadmeadows Frank McGuire. The Board will provide advice to the government on opportunities and projects that will capitalise on Broadmeadows strengths and attract investment.

The $14.3-million Broadmeadows Revitalisation Project approved in the 2016-17 Victorian Budget is already underway to ensure state and local governments are working with the community to provide benefits to the Broadmeadows and Northern Metropolitan communities.

The Labor Government’s contribution to the Broadmeadows Revitalisation Project includes:

  • $7 million towards Council’s Town Hall redevelopment
  • $4 million Broadmeadows Station and Pascoe Vale Rd improvements
  • $2.15 million for Meadowlink Shared Trail planning and construction
  • $1 million for land acquisition
  • $150,000 for loop road planning

$163 million was also announced in the 2017/18 Victorian Budget for the expansion of the Northern Hospital at Epping, significantly boosting health services for the region.
