Creating Jobs, Building More Homes For More Victorians

27 June 2021

The Andrews Labor Government is building new homes for vulnerable Victorians, delivering the security and stability of a safe place to live while creating jobs and driving Victoria’s economic recovery.

Acting Premier James Merlino and Minister for Housing Richard Wynne today announced new Big Housing Build sites at Collingwood and South Yarra – delivering 480 new social and affordable homes while generating more than 2,000 new jobs as part of the landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build.

Extensive community consultation for the 150 homes being built at Wellington Street in Collingwood will start in the coming days, with existing tenants encouraged to have a say on the project designs.

Work is already underway at the Collingwood site to ensure the developments deliver improved open, communal and recreational spaces. The new homes will be built alongside existing public housing and will not require tenants to relocate.

Architecture firm Fieldwork Projects have been appointed as the principal design consultants for the Collingwood project.

Master planning is underway for the Simmons Street site in South Yarra, where 330 homed will be delivered as part of the phase one works that will see the entire site reinvigorated.

Residents are encouraged to have their say during the master planning process which begins in the coming weeks.

Architecture firm Hayball is updating the masterplan for community consultation and getting ready for development work to commence.

The new sites add to the Big Housing Build projects already under way at Ascot Vale, Ashburton, Flemington, Hawthorn, Heidelberg West and North Richmond.

The Government’s landmark $5.3 billion Big Housing Build – the largest single investment in social and affordable housing in Australia’s history – is delivering more than 12,000 new homes across Victoria.

This historic investment will boost Victoria’s social housing supply by 10 per cent, while creating 10,000 jobs per year over the next four years.
