Christmas Day Public Holiday To Remain

08 February 2016

Following the Andrews Labor Government commitment to review the current Christmas Day public holiday arrangements, Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Philip Dalidakis has today confirmed that existing arrangements for the holiday will remain in place.

When Christmas Day falls on a weekend, the public holiday will continue to be substituted to the next available weekday rather than 25 December. In 2016 as Christmas Day falls on Sunday 25 December, the public holiday will be observed on Tuesday 27 December.

There will be restricted trading for applicable businesses on Christmas Day (25 December 2016), however, there will be no trading restrictions imposed on the substituted Christmas Day public holiday (27 December 2016) so business opening hours will be a matter for individual owners and operators.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Small Business, Innovation and Trade Philip Dalidakis

“The Christmas Day public holiday will remain in place and will give Victorians more quality time to spend with their families and friends.”

“There will be no trading restrictions imposed on the Christmas Day public holiday. Whether businesses open or close is entirely a matter for them.”
