Caring For Our Marine And Coastal Environment

20 May 2022

Victoria’s precious marine and coastal environments will be protected and enhanced to benefit the Victorian community now and in the future.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio today launched the Marine and Coastal Strategy - a five-year action plan for a healthy marine and coastal environment.

Victoria’s has over 2,500 kilometres of coastline and about 10,000 square kilometres of marine waters.

The Strategy sets out six priority actions including supporting Traditional Owners to care for Country, adapting to climate change, enhancing coastal habitats and improving coordination across Government, industry and community.

Over the five years we will progress the Port Phillip Bay Environmental Management Plan and the Cape to Cape Resilience Project, begin work on Victoria’s first marine spatial planning framework and help private land owners manage the risks of erosion and inundation.

This strategy is a key objective of the Marine and Coastal Policy 2020, which sets out a 15-year vision to build safer, healthier and more resilient marine and coastal environment.

In the 2022/23 Victorian Budget we invested $16.9 million to deliver these actions including to replace, repair and maintain coastal assets from erosion and inundation at critical locations across the state.

Since 2014, the Andrews Labor Government has invested over $93 million in marine and coastal projects.
