Building The Mordialloc Bypass

01 May 2017

The Andrews Labor Government will build the long-awaited Mordialloc Bypass to slash congestion in the south east.

The Victorian Budget 2017/18 will include $300 million to build the 9 kilometre road between Springvale Road in Aspendale Gardens and the Dingley Bypass to slash congestion and improve safety in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing areas.

This long-overdue road link will be constructed by the Labor Government after the previous Liberal Government failed to get the project done.

Under this massive new congestion-busting investment for Melbourne’s bayside suburbs, the bypass will be separated from the busy Springvale Road intersection through the construction of an overpass.

Traffic signals will be installed at other intersections to improve safety and traffic flow and a shared cycling and pedestrian path will be constructed along the full length of the bypass.

Melbourne’s south east is growing rapidly and the increasing traffic is causing frustration, with congestion impacting the reliability of local buses and delaying drivers and freight vehicles.

Peak hour traffic turning on and off the Mornington Peninsula Freeway often results in queuing, causing bottlenecks and delays on surrounding roads.

Over coming months, local residents, business owners and road users will be asked for input on concept designs, which will be considered as part of the planning process.

VicRoads will also consult with local councils, freight operators and bus companies to ensure the needs of the whole community are met, and the project is expected to be completed by 2021.
