Minister for Education James Merlino today visited Korumburra Secondary College and Mirboo North Secondary College in South Gippsland to tour the schools and meet students and staff.
While at Mirboo North Secondary College, Mr Merlino addressed the South Gippsland Principals Network on the value of learning from local industry and the importance of building links between schools and industry.
Mirboo North Secondary College and Korumburra Secondary College, visited by Mr Merlino earlier in the day, have done just that. They have both established working relationships with local firms, which includes work experience placements and staff from the companies coming into the schools to work with students.
The South Gippsland Principals Network is made up of principals from 18 primary schools, five secondary colleges and two specialist schools in the South Gippsland and Bass Coast area.
The 2015-16 Victorian Budget invests almost $4 billion in Victoria’s education and skills system – representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.
As part of this, Korumburra Secondary College will receive an extra $257,000 in equity funding next year, an increase of $141,000 on last year. Mirboo Secondary College will receive $88,000 in equity funding, up from nothing last year. This money is part of the Education State commitment to give schools an extra $747m over the next four years.
The Budget provides $325 million to renovate, refurbish or rebuild 67 schools. It will fund the first stage of an extensive asbestos removal program so that families can be assured their children are being educated in safe schools.
It also includes $180 million for programs that will help families cover the extra costs of education, like camps, excursions and uniforms, so no child misses out.
