Works are underway to restore Ballarat’s nearly 150-year-old Her Majesty’s Theatre, thanks to support from the Andrews Labor Government.
Treasurer Tim Pallas today visited the theatre to announce $10 million for stage three of restoration works, which will bring the theatre up to modern standards, create construction jobs and breathe new life into Ballarat’s performing arts scene.
Works include installation of new front and rear venue lifts, accessibility improvements, orchestra pit thrust lifts, an upgrade to auditorium lighting, new box office and balustrade works.
Two stages of restoration works have now been completed – including essential remediation works to support the ongoing use of the building.
Stages one and two of the project were funded by the City of Ballarat and Heritage Victoria – providing $5.3 million and $2 million respectively.
Heritage Victoria’s grant was provided under the $60 million Living Heritage program, which safeguards and reactivate Victoria’s heritage icons.
Established in 1875, Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat is a nationally significant performing arts centre that is home to Australia’s longest running grand eisteddfod, Royal South Street.
The theatre hosts around 75,000 patrons and 15,000 performers each year.
