The Andrews Labor Government is cementing Victoria’s position as a leader in international education and training, providing more support for students and apprentices, and giving industry more of a say.
Victoria is already known for its world-class universities, research facilities and TAFEs. It’s why 175,000 international students choose to study here each year. But we can’t take it for granted.
The Victorian Budget 2016/17 includes $31.9 million over four years to implement Victoria’s International Education Sector Strategy.
The funding will give students more support and a better experience while studying here, improve partnerships between providers and the community, and attract more students to our regional centres.
Industry plays an important role in shaping our training sector and making sure apprentices and trainees have the skills they need in the workforce.
The Budget includes $14 million over four years to create a new industry engagement framework to give industry and businesses a greater say in Victoria’s training system.
Led by the Victorian Skills Commissioner, Neil Coulson, the framework will bring together employers and unions to align training with industry needs.
Young people who have left school at an early age or are long-term unemployed will get help to prepare for training and work, with $20 million for the Reconnect Program.
Additionally, $5 million will contribute to the fit out of a Geelong plumbing training facility and the construction of a Narre Warren facility, fulfilling our election commitment.
The new Plumbing Industry Climate Action Centres will provide students and the existing workforce with specialised plumbing training, working alongside the Gordon Institute of TAFE in Geelong and Chisholm Institute in the south-east.
The Budget also includes $10 million over two years towards the redevelopment of Monash University’s Alexander Theatre, currently used by more than 100 schools, community and cultural groups.
The makeover will include two new performance spaces, increased seating, better accessibility, improved lighting and acoustics, with additional funding from Monash University and philanthropic donations.
