Boost For Sport Clubs Hit By Restrictions

29 June 2021

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering support for grassroots sporting clubs and organisations impacted by recent health restrictions.

Minister for Community Sport Ros Spence today announced 202 clubs and organisations across the state had secured grants of $2,000 after clubs took a financial hit recently.

The Sporting Club Grants Program was made available to assist those clubs that incurred costs that could not be recouped after events or activities were cancelled or postponed.

The grants can be used to cover cancellation fees for facilities, coaches and officials, as well as loss of perishable goods and booking fees.

Grant recipients include Hallam Football Netball Club, Greensborough Hockey Club and Rochester Football Netball Club which received $2,000 towards the irrecoverable costs of cancelling training and competitions over the recent lockdown period.

The Sporting Club Grants Program is part of the Government’s work to make sport more accessible and inclusive, stimulate local economies, build sustainable sport and recreation and volunteer opportunities, and increase local participation.

Since 2014, the Government has provided more than 8,300 sporting club grants totalling more than $12 million to clubs across the state.

The Government has also allocated $40 million to clubs, leagues, state associations and other organisations from the Community Sport Sector COVID-19 Short-Term Survival Package.

The next round of the Sporting Club Grants Program is due to open later this year with grants available for new uniforms and equipment, training coaches, officials and volunteers and improving club operational effectiveness.
