Boost For Mornington Peninsula Aboriginal Organisations

21 December 2018

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting self-determination by improving the community facilities of Aboriginal organisations across Victoria.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Gavin Jennings today announced a series of grants for Aboriginal organisations across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula to improve their facilities.

The Labor Government will provide:

  • $50,000 to Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation for a business case to address its future infrastructure needs and report on options for the redevelopment of the former Point Nepean Visitor Centre to provide a vibrant cultural hub for cultural practices by Bunurong people on Bunurong Country.
  • $80,000 to Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association to extend their office space to accommodate the growth within the organisation, which will improve the Gathering Place operations.
  • $150,000 to Nairm Marr Djambana to develop an outdoor area for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to gather, connect and heal.

The grants are from the second round of the Labor Government’s Aboriginal Community Infrastructure Program, which has invested $14.9 million to build new community infrastructure or to repair, refurbish or expand existing facilities.

Improving Aboriginal community infrastructure is fundamental to the pursuit of self-determination, and social and economic development for Aboriginal Victorians.

The Labor Government acknowledges the right to self-determination and recognises that only when Aboriginal people are central to the decision-making processes that affect their lives, will sustained and long-term changes in health and wellbeing be achieved.
