Bigger, Better Casey Hospital Revamp Now Underway

24 October 2017

The Andrews Labor Government is getting on with delivering an even bigger and better Casey Hospital, with major construction works on the $135 million redevelopment now underway.

Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Health Jill Hennessy today joined Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan and Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley to celebrate the milestone and turn the first sod.

This major expansion now includes 128 new multi-day beds, 12 intensive care unit beds, 12 day surgical beds and six new operating theatres – more than first promised.

It will see Casey Hospital treat more than 25,000 extra patients, perform an extra 8,000 procedures and support an extra 1,300 births annually, enabling it to meet the soaring demand for health care in Melbourne’s south east.

The emergency department short stay unit will be redeveloped, and a new central sterilising supply department will be added, while it will also feature an upgraded pharmacy, back-of-house areas, 333 extra car parking spaces and refurbished café and retail areas.

The City of Casey is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia, and the third fastest growing in Victoria. Its population has an average growth of 7,300 per year and is expected to hit 495,000 by 2036. It is also home to the biggest baby boom, with 86 babies born weekly. By 2035, this is expected to jump to 126 babies each week.

The expansion means that growing families who call Casey home, now and into the future, will be able to get the high quality and safe care they need, sooner and closer to loved ones.

This project is also a big win for the local economy, with 92 jobs created during construction, including 21 apprenticeships. It will be built with 85 per cent local content and is on track to be completed by late 2019.

Monash Health will also partner with Monash University to build new education and training facilities for medical, nursing and allied health students at Casey Hospital.
