Families across the Goulburn Valley now have better access to world-class emergency care and facilities, with the final stage of the Andrews Labor Government’s redevelopment almost complete.

Minister for Health Mary-Anne Thomas today announced the new emergency department – which was expanded and upgraded as part of the massive almost $230 million redevelopment of the Goulburn Valley Health’s Shepparton Hospital is fully operational and the remainder of works are expected to finish soon.

The major upgrade has doubled the capacity of the emergency department to 44 treatment spaces and delivered nine short stay beds - for patients who need care for less than 24 hours. It also boasts the latest technology with two new x-ray rooms, a CT scan room and ultrasound room.

As part of the upgrade a five-storey inpatient tower has already been delivered featuring ten ICU beds, 64 inpatient beds and four new operating theatres while a single-storey 16-chair dialysis unit, 12-bed maternity unit and birthing suite and new special care nursery and paediatric ward were also recently opened.

The new 12-bed paediatric ward which has been designed to create a colourful and comforting environment for kids and their families will soon open – ensuring they get the care they need in the most comfortable space.

While the new 10-cot special care nursery boasts the latest technology with specially trained staff delivering the best care to newborns and support to families.

The upgraded and expanded maternity unit and birthing suite is also ensuring more local mums can give birth closer to home, family and loved ones.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, in partnership with Goulburn Valley Health, existing theatres and theatre support spaces are also being refurbished as part of the project with final works underway.

In another win for local families the Labor Government is investing $25 million to build a state-of-the-art Early Parenting Centre in Shepparton – giving parents the advice and support they need, close to home.

Since coming to office, the Labor Government's investments in our healthcare system – and the workers that look after us – total more than $158 billion.
