Big Boost For Grassroots Sport In Geelong And Surf Coast

13 April 2018

In a big win for the community, local clubs across Geelong and the Surf Coast will share in the biggest investment in women’s and grassroots sport in Victoria’s history thanks to the Andrews Labor Government.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined Minister for Sport John Eren, Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney and Member for Geelong Christine Couzens at Surf Coast Secondary College today, which will be home to a new four court indoor basketball stadium thanks to a $3 million upgrade.

The centre is a busy sports hub for locals playing basketball, netball, soccer and badminton across the region – but growing demand is putting pressure on clubs and the facility.

The revamp is part of a $13.5 million project to deliver three new courts and a multi-purpose space to the existing Surf Coast Secondary College Indoor Stadium, which will boost access for the whole community.

The Labor Government is investing in community sport across the Geelong and Surf Coast region including:

  • $1.17 million to upgrade the main pavilion, change rooms, oval amenities and netball amenities for the St Mary's Football and Netball Club
  • $860,000 for upgrades to facilities and courts at Ocean Grove Tennis Club
  • $564,000 for South Barwon Football and Netball Club to upgrade change rooms and spectator facilities

The Labor Government has also previously announced $100,000 to develop the third soccer pitch at the Torquay North Civic and Community Precinct.

The Victorian Budget 2018/19 will invest $241.6 million in community sport, including more than $100 million to improve facilities and access for women.

The landmark package will also bring more footy to Geelong, securing at least 8 matches at Kardinia Park for the next 30 years.
