The Moe Cup is returning to this year’s Spring Racing Carnival thanks to a $140,000 funding boost supported by the Andrews Labor Government.
The Moe Cup will mark its return this Thursday following a one-year hiatus due to a number of upgrades and improvements to the track. The course proper is now regarded as one of the best in country Victoria.
The Government is providing more than $40,000 for the event, courtesy of its Victorian Racing Industry Fund Raceday Attraction Program. The Moe Racing Club is also contributing $98,500 in funding and in-kind support.
The Moe Cup is a highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival and has attracted crowds of up to 10,000 patrons in previous years.
To reward local community members for their patience during the upgrades, the club is offering half-price entry for 1000 patrons and 2500 free race books, as well as a subsidised hospitality package in the Turfside Marquee.
Live bands will entertain racegoers and there will be a Fashions on the Field competition with the best-dressed entrant receiving a $2500 travel voucher.
AFL stars including Geelong’s Tom Lonergan and Melbourne's Max Gawn will also be appearing in the Hillside Pavilion, the Turfside Marquee and the Carlton Dry Precinct as race day ambassadors.
Racing in the Gippsland region generates almost $60 million in economic activity each year and employs more than 590 people in full-time equivalent positions.
