Backing Aboriginal Victorians Across A Range Of Sports

30 June 2021

The Andrews Labor Government is helping Aboriginal Victorians get involved in sport and recreation with new grants available to increase participation and cover the costs of uniforms and equipment.

Acting Minister for Community Sport Shaun Leane today launched the 2021-2022 Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program with $50,000 worth of grants available.

Grants of up to $1,500 are available for teams to participate in statewide or national carnivals, grants of up to $1,000 are available to cover items like team uniforms and sporting equipment and grants of up to $750 are available for travel and accommodation expenses.

Previous grant recipients include the Burnanga Indigenous Fishing Club which received $1,000 for uniforms and support to represent the club at events and competitions, and Northcote Junior Football Club which received $1,000 for uniforms for local Aboriginal players.

The program reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting the Victorian Aboriginal community and builds stronger connections within the community sport sector.

Since the start of the program in 2020, the Government has provided 114 grants totalling more than $126,000 to Aboriginal community run organisations, clubs and individuals across the state.

It’s one of the many ways the Government is ensuring individuals, teams and organisations have all the resources they need to provide opportunities for all Victorians.

Applications for funding are open until 4 August 2021.
