The Andrews Labor Government is pleased to support the Avoca Shire Turf Club (ASTC) with a $10,495 boost for this year’s Avoca Anzac Day Races, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.
The ASTC’s Anzac Day race meeting – which attracts thousands of racegoers from across the Pyrenees region – will again feature traditional Anzac Day commemorations including an ex-military vehicle parade and the sounding of the last post.
Racegoers will enjoy some of the best fare from the Pyrenees region with a showcase of local wine, craft beer and produce alongside a bumper day of country thoroughbred racing.
A special tasting of local wine will continue across the weekend at the Avoca Hotel on Friday 24 April and the Avoca riverside market on Sunday 26 April.
A popular camping spot, Avoca Racecourse will host a number of family attractions and entertainment including performances by renowned bush poet Colin Driscoll, a mobile zoo, jumping castle, live music, egg and spoon races and a barbeque.
Having become a major tradition on Anzac Day, the ASTC will also broadcast the AFL so patrons can catch the Collingwood v Essendon game live from the MCG as well as St Kilda v Carlton from Wellington, New Zealand.
This is just one of many local racing initiatives supported by the Government’s Raceday Attraction Program. The ASTC is also investing $12,178 to host this year’s Anzac Day commemorations.
The Raceday Attraction Program is funded through the return of on-course wagering taxes for initiatives to attract people to race meetings across the state.
