Artists And Students Unite To Boost Creativity At School

23 April 2021

From podcasts to street art, Victorian students will learn new skills by co-designing projects with professional artists and creatives, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government’s Creative Learning Partnerships program.

Minister for Creative Industries Danny Pearson announced the 14 schools that will participate in the program, which pairs artists and other creative professionals and organisations with Victorian schools to work on a project that takes a creative approach to the curriculum.

Students from Foundation to Year 10 will participate in tailor-made projects that span literature, theatre, visual arts, sound design and film making.

Ten schools have been granted $10,000 each to engage an individual artist or creative to work with students on projects that both inspire imagination and support curriculum delivery.

Fitzroy Primary School will partner with professional podcaster Oscar Jolly who will work with students to create their own podcasts. The project exposes students to the creative processes of writing, research, and content creation as well as the technical skills needed to broadcast to their community.

Another four schools have been awarded grants of up to $35,000 on ambitious programs co-created with creative organisations.

Gowrie Street Primary School in Shepparton will undertake a dual residency program with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) which will see students become ‘artists in residence’ at the iconic Southbank gallery, and ACCA educators and artists setting up camp at the school.

ACCA’s exhibition Who’s Afraid of Public Space? will kickstart a series of artist-led workshops and city-adventure excursions. The students’ artwork will be displayed at ACCA and in their local community.

The Creative Learning Partnerships program is run by Creative Victoria in partnership with the Department of Education and Training. For the full list of participating schools and creative partners, visit creative.vic.gov.auExternal Link
