Art Show Highlights Victorian TAFE Student Talents

19 May 2015

The Andrews Labor Government is providing greater opportunities for creative TAFE students by reintroducing the TAFE and Higher Education Art Series Exhibitions.

The exhibitions, the creation of the late Lynne Kosky, will once again give talented students the opportunity to have their work curated and displayed in one of Melbourne’s most important heritage buildings.

Like previous ministers, the Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert, will host the artwork in his Treasury Place offices for six months. He will launch the first exhibition in the series at an event this evening.

Visual arts students from Chisholm Institute will be the first to exhibit their work. Design students have produced the program and hospitality students will cater the launch event.

Victoria’s arts and culture industry contributed about 68,000 jobs and an estimated $6.1 billion a year to the Victorian economy — or $11.4 billion if indirect benefits such as tourism are taken into account.

The original TAFE Art Series exhibitions were conceived of by former Bracks and Brumby Government Minister Lynne Kosky in 1999 and ran, with her support, until 2006.

Mr Herbert said the new series will be dedicated to the legacy of Ms Kosky, who died last year aged 56.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Training and Skills, Steve Herbert

“I’m delighted by the high calibre of art and creativity in this TAFE and Higher Education Series. It shows Victoria has a strong future generation of artists who will make their mark on our culture for the better.”

“By reintroducing these exhibitions, we’re giving creative TAFE students more opportunities to have their work curated, displayed and promoted.”

“A strong training system and a successful arts and culture sector go hand in hand. We’ve invested an extra $350 million in our TAFEs, to provide more training that leads to skills and jobs.”
