Another Major Step Forward For South Melbourne Park Primary School

23 March 2016

Plans for South Melbourne Park Primary School have taken a major step forward, following last night's passage of the Land (Revocation of Reservations) Bill 2015 through the Victorian Parliament.

The re-reservation of the Albert Road site for educational purposes is a key step in delivering a new primary school for families across South Melbourne, Albert Park, Middle Park and surrounding areas. This new school will also ease the pressure on existing schools in the area which are bursting at the seams.

The Andrews Labor Government will plan, fund and build a primary school at Albert Road, adjacent to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC). A new school planning committee has been established to provide strategic advice on the development of the school and is comprised of the local community, education experts and key stakeholders.

The architects (Gray Puksand) have been appointed and are working with the new school planning group on how best to incorporate existing buildings into the new design.

The Labor Government recognises the need for more schools in the area which is why it will deliver a new South Melbourne Park Primary School, a new vertical primary school in Ferrars Street, the Year 9 Bay Street campus upgrade for Albert Park College, an upgrade to Elwood College and a new high school for Prahran.

The Labor Government is investing billions of dollars to make Victoria the Education State. The 2015–16 State Budget invests almost $4 billion over four years - representing the single biggest boost to education funding in Victoria’s history.
